Torden, Hear the Thunder by C. Kirkham As reviewed by New York Times Best-Selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh Of all the breeds of horses in the world, one of the least familiar is the Friesian. Yet the history of this noble breed extends far back into the middle of the 13th century, when it was favored by warriors and the royal courts of Europe as well as French and Spanish riding schools. Friesians had the strength and swiftness to maneuver in battle despite the heavy weight of the armored knights who rode them. These well-regarded horses, usually black, were so decimated in number by the start of World War I that they were considered nearly extinct, and thus their participation in the war effort remains unknown. In Torden, Hear the Thunder, new author C. Kirkham tells the touching story of Niesje Brouwers, an intelligent and likable 11-year-old girl living on a farm in the Netherlands near the Belgian border. Not long after the start of World War I, Niesje discovers a scared and abandoned Friesian stallion that has been critically wounded by shrapnel. Given the circumstances and the deprivations of war, Niesje's uncle argues that the poor animal should be put out of its misery, but Niesje pleads with him to give the stallion a chance. During his long recovery, she names him "Torden," the Danish word for thunder, and as this gentle giant becomes part of the family, he and his brave young caretaker learn to survive the dangerous war years together. Told in the stirring tradition of Black Beauty and My Friend Flicka, Torden, Hear the Thunder is a deeply moving tale of courage, friendship and hope. Author C. Kirkham’s warm love for these admirable horses shines throughout her gentle story and will light up the heart of any reader young or old. |

Emily Avent, Professional Editor First of all I want to tell you what a pleasure it was to read your manuscript. I thoroughly, sincerely enjoyed it, especially as I was a former “horse girl” myself. |

Ronda from Georgia I spent the entire weekend reading Christy's book Torden, hear the thunder! Oh my, that is one of the most heart warming books I've ever read, even though it is written about a young girl and her Friesian, it brought out sooooooooooooooo many feelings about this breed that I do so love. I bought my first horse when I was 18, my parents could never afford one and always said, "you'll out grow it", LOL, yeah right, and I've raised horses ever since and it's odd how when we get to adulthood and we've had them in our life for such a long time that we tend to take them for granted as always going to be there for us and lose some of the early "I've GOT to have a horse" feelings, this book took me back to my childhood while I was reading it and no other horse book that I've read has ever done that, the whole time I was reading it I wasn't a 55 year old woman anymore, in my heart and mind I was living the experience as a young girl, hopefully that makes sense.
I can't say enough wonderful things about the book and knowing there will be a sequel is wonder-ful! Come on Christy girl, you've gotta get that other book finished! Since Christmas is coming, I thought I'd let you guys know how it effected me, it's a great read for young or old and I can't wait for the next one! Ronda
